Lot 111 Old Rip Salt Jefferson Island Louisiana Advertising Paperweight

Old Rip Salt advertising paperweight, likely cast iron. History, limited information online: Old Rip Salt Co mined salt on Jefferson Island, Louisiana – which sits atop a major salt dome. The company may be – not is – related to Morton Salt which also had operations in the area. Jefferson Island is better known for its proximity to Lake Peigneur. In 1980, a Texaco oil drilling rig accidentally punctured the Diamond Crystal Salt Mine under Lake Peigneur. The lake drained into the mine, dissolving salt pillars. The resulting whirlpool drained the lake, destroyed the rig, 11 barges, a tugboat, and engulfed parts of Jefferson Island. The shallow lake became a 200 foot deep crater that also reversed the Delcambre Canal. Remarkably, no human lives were lost. About 3 3/4 x 3 x 2 3/4 inches
