In 1872, Philip W. Pratt invented and patented the first automatic sprinkler, with plugs that melted to release water. In 1874, Henry S. Parmelee patented the Parmelee Sprinkler with soldered holes that melted when heated releasing water. In 1878, Grinnell patented a sprinkler tube, Parmelee received patents for improvements, and Grinnell agreed to manufacture the Parmelee Sprinkler. The breakthrough occurred in 1871 when Grinnell patented the first sensitive automatic sprinkler, using a heat-activated fusible link – a water filled glass bulb – for responsive water release. Grinnell introduced the faster acting quartzoid glass bulb sprinkler in the early 1920s. About 3 3/8 x 1 3/4 x 1 3/4 inches
