The paperweight features the Garlock Trade Mark, which is strikingly similar to a Masonic square and compass, the the company tag line: The Standard Packing of the World. The back describes the company as Manufacturers of Quality Controlled Mechanical Packings. We do not know what it is made of: hard rubber – bakelite – painted plaster? History: Olin Garlock invented a seal – a gasket – for piston rods used in train locomotive engines, more broadly industrial steam engines including those used on ships. His sealing product was so much better than anything else on the market that Garlock seals became the industry standard. Garlock patented his seal in the United States in 1887 and founded the company bearing his name. The Garlock Packing Company later became Garlock Sealing Technologies, reflecting its broad line of fluid sealing solutions, and was acquired by Colt Industries in 1976.
