Marked G M Co on the top and S. Birkenstein & Sons Chicago on the base. This resembles an ingot and is – in our opinion – a penholder or paperweight, likely a gift to employees of G M Co. We do not know who G M Co refers to; it may or may not refer to General Motors Company. Likely brass. History, per online research: S. Birkenstein & Sons was a significant Chicago-based metals firm, dealing in scrap metal and non-ferrous metals e.g. copper and aluminum. The company was active in the early 20th century; records exist from 1907 and the 1920s. About 3/4 x 3 1/4 x 7/8 inches
