Lot 49 Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Co. 75th Anniversary Advertising Paperweight

1983 75th Anniversary Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Subsidiary The Triangle Corp. It is made of brass and features an adjustable pair of pliers, a signature product, at the top. History: The company was founded in 1908 as The Diamond Calk Horseshoe Company by Otto Swanstrom, a Swedish blacksmith in Duluth, Minnesota. He developed removable calks for horseshoes, patenting both horseshoes and calks for horses transporting lumber. [ A calk or caulk on a horseshoe is similar to a cleat or crampon worn for better traction on ice or rough terrain. ] As automobiles replaced horses, the company started manufacturing tools. It supplied US troops with picks, shovels, spades, and barbed wire cutters during WW I. In 1920, the company started manufacturing adjustable pliers – shown on the paperweight. The company changed its name to Diamond Tool & Horseshoe Co. in 1958. In 1981, the company was sold and operations merged into Cooper Industries. However, that is not the end of the story. In 1983, Jack Swanstrom, a former president ( and descendant of the founder? ) founded Swanstrom Tools USA. Since all of the Diamond Tool manufacturing operations in Duluth were closed, many former employees joined the new company – which is still operating today in Superior Wisconsin.
