Columbus McKinnon Chain Co Inswell Patented advertising paperweight. We believe the paperweight pre-dates 1927 when the company moved its headquarters out of Columbus, Ohio. The Inswell Patented name refers to a patented electric welding method for joining chain links, making them suitable for load bearing applications. History: The company was founded in 1875 when L.E. McKinnon started making horse carriage hardware. In 1909, McKinnon Chain Company was formed. It became Columbus McKinnon after merging with Columbus Chain in 1917. While we could not locate the inswell patent, we know from online sources that the McKinnon Chain Company was formed to make electric welded chains. We can find online advertisements for the Inswell Weld from the 1920s. In 1927, the company moved its headquarters from Columbus, Ohio, to Tonawanda, New York, where their was greater demand for its electric welded chains.
