REO Speedwagon Special Formula Automobile Engine Block Salesman Sample. Long before REO Speedwagon, the rock band, there was the REO Motor Car Company ( 1905 – 1975 ). While REO did not invent the flathead engine, the company certainly helped popularize it. The REO Speed Wagon engine was 6-cylinder flathead engine that was cast in a single block. ( The cylinders of competitors’ engines were cast one or two cylinders at a time. ) The result was a smoother running and more durable engine than 4-cylinder competitors. It is made of cast iron and was likely painted gray when issued. Marked: REO Spec’l Formula Nickle [ incorrectly spelled ] Chrome 1C2A1 C.W.C. CWC likely refers to the Campbell, Wyant, and Cannon Foundry located in Muskegon, Michigan. Based upon an old – 2011 – discussion in the Antique Automobile Club of America about a – believed to be – 1926 REO Speed Wagon, an iconic fire truck: “on the [ motor ] head it has A70 CWC 1FA195 1-C2a-1 along with it saying Chrome Nickle on the engine block”. The author of the post was seeking confirmation of the production date; unfortunately, no one responded. With this information, though, we date the Engine Block to the mid-1920s.
