Socony Vacuum Oil Company Gargoyle Cutting Fluids Advertising Barrel Paperweight. ( The logo was a red gargoyle. While not red, a gargoyle is incised on the barrel. ) We know by the company name that it is post 1931. Socony Vacuum Oil Company was formed in 1931 by the merger of the Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony) and the Vacuum Oil Company. It is the direct predecessor of Mobil Oil and the ExxonMobil Corporation.  Gargoyle Cutting Fluids were high-quality metalworking fluids. Products included Gargoyle Velocite Oil for lubrication of high-speed spindles in machine tools and Gargoyle Vactra, a general-purpose lubricants recommended for non-critical industrial applications where lubricant is applied intermittently. Today, the the Gargoyle brand is used for industrial refrigeration lubricants. History: Standard Oil Company of New York aka Socony and the Vacuum Oil Company were originally part of the Standard Oil Trust, which was broken-up by a Supreme Court decision in 1911. They re-merged in 1931 and adopted the red winged horse – Pegasus – as the company trademark. In 1955, the company re-branded as the Socony Mobil Oil Company. In 1966, they dropped the Socony name, becaming the Mobil Oil Company. Then, in 1998, ExxonMobil Corporation was created re-joining more of the John D Rockerfeller empire.
