History: Thatcher Furnace was started following the development of the cast iron Tubular Furnace by John M. Thatcher in 1850. ( The furnace featured a series of cast-iron tubes to increase heating surface area, making it more efficient than other designs. ) While the company administration was located in New York City, its foundry was located in Newark New Jersey. Later, both were located in Garwood, NJ. After the Civil War, the company added cast iron, coal and wood fired kitchen ranges, radiators, and steam and water boilers.
