Marseilles Brick paperweight or salesman sample. Marseilles Brick refers to a style, specifically bricks or pavers with unique textures and colors associated with Marseilles Brick Company – such as the one we are selling. We believe the brick – marked Marseilles Brick – is a salesman sample. Why? Because it is rough. A paperweight would have a smooth surface or felt on one side to protect the top of a desk. That said, there is a shadow on the bottom that suggests felt or paper might have been glued there, making this a paperweight. History, per online resources: The Marseille Clay roof tile was patented in France in 1874, as was the first clay press. Marseille roofing tiles have distinctive grooves for water runoff and were adopted globally. In 1900, thirty-six local brick manufacturers formed the Illinois Brick Company. It is not clear that Marseilles Brick Company – Marseilles Illinois – was initially one of them. Most of the Illinois Brick Company history found online is about Chicago metropolitan area facilities. In 2021, Glen-Gary Corporation acquired the Illinois Brick Company, Marseilles, Illinois facility. In 2023, the Marseilles plant was closed. About 1 1/8 x 3 3/4 x 2 inches
